The Zimbabwe Military Police (ZMP) is the intelligence division of the
Zimbabwe National Army whose duties include
discipline, the prevention and detection of crime and the punishment of
offenders. The ZMP is the successor to the Rhodesian Corps of Military Police
which was established on 01 January 1964 as the Southern Rhodesia Corps of
Military Police. The Corps was renamed in 1967 and adopted its current name
following Zimbabwe’s independence in April 1980.
The wearing of Staff Corps dress and embellishments was changed in November 1967
in favour of the distinctive red colours and badge for which the ZMP, and its
predecessor, became immediately recognisable.
The ZMP wear "Cherry Red" berets and thus it is not surprising that the ZMP flag
has a red field in the centre of which is the ZMP badge. The badge comprises a
yellow Zimbabwe Bird above the letters MP ZIMBABWE,
which is surrounded by a wreath. On a scroll beneath is the motto EXEMPLO
DUCEMUS - "By example we lead" in Latin. The motto is the same as that
previously used by the Rhodesian Corps of Military Police and it is also used by
the Corps of Royal Military Police in the United Kingdom. All the elements of
the badge are in gold within a lozenge with a blue background.
